I'm no anthropologist, but I have a theory that people are drawn to the style and beauty trends of the era they were born into. I, for example, love the silhouettes and hairstyles of the late ‘70s (shoutout to my fellow xennials), and it seems Keke Palmer harbors a whole lot of enthusiasm for the mid- to late-’90s. She was barely out of diapers when beauty trends started to get sparkly, fanciful, and downright cartoonish, which may explain why she's taking the opportunity to live out those looks right now.

Palmer may be in her pixie cut era, but that doesn't mean she's against having a little (or a lot of) fun with long-haired looks like the one she sported on Monday. She was spotted in New York City, exiting a building in SoHo, but it looked more like she was stepping out of a 1998 girl group video. We're talkin' Spice Girls meets B*Witched meets early Destiny's Child.

And sure, the embroidered, low-rise jeans, the cropped, satin shirt, and the ring chain bracelet all recall the late ‘90s, but it’s her beauty details that really serve as an aesthetic time machine.

Keke Palmer smiling in embroidered jeans and a cropped fuchsia topPhoto: Getty Images

Starting with a base of cornrows, Palmer's hair blooms into two fun, messy space buns full of swoops, teasing, and a smattering of crystal clips. As if that weren't ‘90s enough, she’s also wearing two picture-perfect, long, curly tendrils.

Keke Palmer posing in embroidered jeans and a cropped shirtPhoto: Getty Images

Palmer's makeup is also serving so much nostalgia with lip gloss, blush, and shimmering eye shadow that match her fuchsia top. Even her brows are on the skinny side right now. (As someone who was in my late teens in the late '90s, this is both sentimental and triggering to me.)

She manages to look fully like a bona fide ‘90s girl without looking like she’s going to a '90s-themed costume party—the perfect way to wear the vibes of the era without overdoing it.

Do you remember when taupe nail polish became a thing? Because I sure do! It was the dawn of the 2010s—2008 to be exact—and OPI launched a little shade called You Don't Know Jacques! Shortly after that, Chanel dropped Particulière, and my world was officially rocked. When I saw Bella Hadid's latest mani, I instantly flashed back to that era of my life (and its accompanying nail trends), and decided that a taupe manicure is just the thing for spring.

Hadid, who is currently in the south of France for the Cannes Film Festival, attended a Chopard gala looking like a golden goddess in a glittering gown that matched her golden-blonde hair. Instead of matching her nails to her hair to her dress, however, she chose a dark taupe, almost espresso brown shade that added a cool, grounding element to the movie-star glamorous ensemble.

Bella Hadid poses in Cannes. She wears a gold dress and has taupe nails.Getty Images

The model's nails were a medium length and filed into a soft almond shape, painted with several coats of a color that is best described “brown… but not.” Instead of a warm chocolate, they're on the cooler side with a hint of gray and a teeny, tiny drop of lavender. Where red would have been a little too on the nose and sheer, naked nails would have been the more obvious choice—given how popular they are on red carpets of late—this unique shade has a rebellious streak and feels like a nod to Hadid's earth-angel, cowgirl vibe too.

Thankfully, both OPI and Chanel still sell their taupe shades, and a ton of other brands to doo. If you like Hadid's color of choice, try China Glaze's Nail Lacquer in Weathered Bark or Manucurist's Green Nail Polish in Freckles, which they describe as a “woody brown.” What's cooler than an earthy spring manicure in a sea of pastels?

The Refy Face Setter Setting Spray Always Gives Me the Prettiest Glow—Review

    TL;DR:

    • What it is: A setting spray
    • What it does: Locks in powder, cream, and liquid makeup
    • Who it’s for: Anyone looking for a setting spray that not only holds makeup in place, but leaves behind a dewy finish

If I’m wearing makeup, it must be glowy.

I’m not a matte person and never have been. No shade to the finish, it’s just…not for me. I loveeeee being dewy. Usually my slightly shimmery blush-highlighter combos give me an easy, obvious radiance, but it’s not until I lock it all in that the glow gets to really, well, glow.

And the Refy Face Setter has been my go-to for that final step. It’s a superfine mist made with humectants glycerin and polyglutamic acid to lock in moisture—and my makeup. No matter how many spritzes I spray on, the formula never leaves behind those telltale setting spray splotches or clumps. Instead, it gives all of my makeup looks a pretty, dewy finish.

Here’s how I use it: First, I shake the bottle to mix it all up, then I hold it at least eight inches from my face before spritzing directly onto my skin, making sure to hit areas that need extra grip, like my cheeks and forehead.

If I’m really in the mood to glow, I’ll skip setting powder. Scandalous!

The Refy Face Setter is in the May Allure Beauty Box.

The best gel moisturizers are the skin-care equivalent of flipping your pillow over to the cold side. Lightweight, cooling, and fast-absorbing, these water-based formulas drench skin with moisture and deliver a bouncy, fresh-faced glow without the heft of richer creams meant for drier skin. And, not surprisingly, they're "especially beneficial for those with oily, breakout-prone, and combination skin because they provide hydration without leaving behind a greasy residue,” says Kristina Collins, MD, a double board-certified dermatologist based in Austin.

That said, anyone who prefers skin care that feels breathable and virtually weightless may understand the appeal of these formulas, too. For instance, they're a boon for those in a humid environment, "as heavier creams can feel occlusive when there’s already so much moisture in the air,” says Dr. Collins.

Instead of relying heavily on rich oils and butters, gel moisturizers typically use humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin to pull water into the skin, giving them that signature juicy, cushiony texture. And today’s formulas go far beyond basic hydration: Many soothe redness, support the skin barrier, soften fine lines, and balance excess oil—all while feeling practically weightless. Ahead, we rounded up the gel moisturizers Allure editors and dermatologists reach for again and again.

Why it's worth it: A K-beauty glass-skin staple, the Then I Met You Bong2 Cream is all about the sensorial experience, with a marigold tint (from seaberry and persimmon extracts), citrus scent, and cushiony texture that somehow stays fresh and weightless without pilling under makeup. But this 2025 Best of Beauty Award winner does more than just feel good on skin. It also delivers all the barrier-protecting benefits that you’d expect from a much richer cream—honey draws in moisture, ceramides strengthen skin, and squalane locks in hydration. The glow it leaves behind is courtesy of hallabong citrus extract—a fruit found in Korea’s idyllic Jeju Island that’s naturally abundant in vitamin C and antioxidants. As for “bong bong”? We’re not entirely sure what it means, but we imagine it’s the sound your skin makes after bouncing back to life.

Why it's worth it: The lightweight gel-cream earned a Readers' Choice Award, so we know you know: There’s something delightfully extra about a moisturizer that comes with its own tiny gold spoon (especially when there’s actual gold in the formula, too). But Tatcha’s The Water Cream isn’t just serving luxury for the sake of it. Gold is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties, allowing it to calm irritation and support healthier-looking skin over time; in fact, “by reducing skin inflammation, it may help slow premature aging and wrinkling,” New York City-based, board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, previously told Allure. The formula also features Japanese botanicals like green tea, houttuynia cordata, and Okinawa algae, which soothe and balance, while the brand’s signature rice ferment filtrate leaves skin looking smoother and glowier over time.

Why it's worth it: Not one, not two, but five forms of hyaluronic acid? SkinMedica’s HA5 Hydra Collagen Water Burst Moisturizer is overachieving in the hydration department. Using multiple forms of HA matters, because different molecular sizes hydrate skin at various depths: Some sit closer to the surface for immediate plumping, while others draw in and retain moisture over time. The gel-cream also pairs those hydrators with biomimetic collagen to help skin feel smoother and more cushiony, as well as squalane, urea, and amino acids that reinforce the skin barrier so moisture doesn’t immediately evaporate into thin air. What really makes it stand out for dry skin, though, is the proprietary Microbiome Barrier Complex with prebiotics and Lactobacillus ferment, which support a healthier skin barrier over time—meaning skin not only feels hydrated instantly, but becomes better at holding onto moisture in the first place.

Why it's worth it: The hero ingredient in Beauty of Joseon’s Red Bean Water Gel—red bean extract (a.k.a. Phaseolus angularis seed extract)—is a nod to traditional Korean skin-care rituals, in which red bean was historically used to absorb excess sebum and keep skin looking clearer. Unlike some gel moisturizers that rely on silicones for that slippery texture, this formula layers in humectants like glycerin, betaine, and beta-glucan to deliver actual hydration while still feeling featherlight and almost watery on the skin. The pretty pastel-pink formula may look delicate, but the ingredient lineup means business: Panthenol, allantoin, and licorice-derived ingredients calm irritation while peptides support smoother-looking skin. The finish stays fresh and lightly hydrated—not shiny or sticky—which is exactly why our oily and combination skin testers are squeezing out every last drop.

Gel moisturizers are perfect for my combination skin because they hydrate without feeling heavy or emphasizing my oily, pore-ridden T-zone. Red Bean Water Gel, in particular, is chock-full of red bean extract to deliver moisture while also absorbing sebum (thanks to saponins)—a magical combo, if you ask me. It's cooling, refreshing, and layers wonderfully underneath my sunscreen and makeup sans pilling. Why it's worth it: Aestura’s recently reformulated AtoBarrier365 Hydro Soothing Cream now features the brand’s patented ceramide capsule technology for even stronger barrier support; those tiny visible beads suspended throughout the cream burst as you apply, helping reinforce the skin barrier while locking in moisture. The updated formula also swaps the older gel-cream texture for a more cooling water-cream feel, making it especially satisfying for overheated, oily, or easily flushed skin. Compressed hyaluronic acid (which the brand says absorbs five times better than conventional hyaluronic acid) pulls hydration deep into the skin, while zinc balances excess sebum and calms irritation. Also, a fun fact: Aestura claims the formula can cool skin temperature by up to 10 degrees—how exactly they measure that, we can’t say, but we can confirm how ridiculously refreshed skin feels after applying it.

Why it's worth it: “Effaclar” comes from the French word effacer, meaning “to erase” or “clear away”—and in the case of La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar A.Z. Gel, that applies to both breakouts and fine lines. This multitasking gel-cream combines azelaic acid to fade post-acne marks and smooth rough texture with 1.2% salicylic acid, which exfoliates inside pores to clear congestion and keep oily skin in check. Hyaluronic acid adds lightweight hydration, helping skin feel balanced, while zinc reduces excess shine throughout the day. “It’s a well-rounded formula that sits nicely beneath moisturizer, SPF, and makeup,” says Jenna Queller, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Boca Raton, Florida. Keep in mind: Unlike many La Roche-Posay products, this formula does contain a small amount of added fragrance, likely to offset zinc’s naturally metallic scent, so sensitive skin types may want to patch test first.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Will gel moisturizers pill under makeup?

Gel textures are generally among the most makeup-friendly moisturizers in your skin-care routine because they absorb quickly and leave a smooth, lightweight finish rather than a thick or greasy layer. That said, pilling can still happen depending on the formula and how many products you’re layering on top. “Silicone-heavy primers, certain sunscreens, or overapplying skin care can increase the chance of pilling,” says Dr. Collins. Her best advice: Let each layer fully absorb before moving on to the next step, especially before applying foundation or primer.

    Do gel moisturizers clog pores?

Any product can contribute to breakouts if it contains pore-clogging ingredients like thicker waxes or heavier oils (coconut oil or cocoa butter, for example), says Dr. Collins. That said, a gel moisturizer is less likely to clog pores than a rich cream because they’re typically oil-free or contain fewer rich, occlusive ingredients. If you’re especially breakout-prone, look for lightweight formulas without heavy oils or fragrance and pay attention to how your skin responds over time.

Are there any drawbacks to using gel moisturizer?

Since they typically contain fewer rich, occlusive ingredients, “gel moisturizers may not lock in hydration as effectively as richer creams, especially if you have very dry, eczema-prone, mature, or dehydrated skin—or if you’re in low-humidity or cold climates,” says Dr. Collins. Another thing to watch for: Some gel formulas use alcohol or fragrance to enhance that lightweight, fast-drying feel, which can irritate sensitive skin. If your skin is reactive, Dr. Collins recommends sticking with fragrance-free moisturizers that include barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides or niacinamide.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best gel moisturizers, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from board-certified dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.
